- A guide to choosing a new bed and mattress
Adapted from the Sleep Council's recommendations.
- Decide your priorities and concerns in advance.
These could include: price, storage, access to bedroom, turning the mattress, getting in and out of bed, overall size or shape and health.
- If you are on a limited budget, spend more on the mattress than the bedstead itself. It is the mattress that aids good sleep not the bedstead.
- Buy for correct support and comfort for your weight and build - not just firmness.
- Think big! - larger beds lead to less disturbed sleep.
- You get what you pay for - especially with mattresses - spend as much as you can afford
- Every £100 you spent on a new mattress & bed costs just 2.7p a night over 10 years.
- Remember, you're going to spend over 29,000 hours on your bed during its (10 year) lifespan, so its worth taking a little time and effort in the beginning to make sure you make the right choice.
